چکیده

In this paper, we propose a fast Gauss-Seidel Operator Splitting (GSOS) algorithm for addressing multi-term nonsmooth convex composite optimization, which has wide applications in machine learning, signal processing and statistics. The proposed GSOS algorithm inherits the advantage of the Gauss-Seidel technique to accelerate the optimization procedure, and leverages the operator splitting technique to reduce the computational complexity. In addition, we develop a new technique to establish the global convergence of the GSOS algorithm. To be specific, we first reformulate the iterations of GSOS as a twostep iterations algorithm by employing the tool of operator optimization theory. Subsequently, we establish the convergence of GSOS based on the two-step iterations algorithm reformulation. At last, we apply the proposed GSOS algorithm to solve overlapping group Lasso and graph-guided fused Lasso problems. Numerical experiments show that our proposed GSOS algorithm is superior to the state-of-the-art algorithms in terms of both efficiency and effectiveness.

A block symmetric Gauss-Seidel decomposition theorem for convex composite quadratic programming and its applications

For a symmetric positive semidefinite linear system of equations Qx = b, where x = (x1, . . . , xs) is partitioned into s blocks, with s ≥ 2, we show that each cycle of the classical block symmetric Gauss-Seidel (block sGS) method exactly solves the associated quadratic programming (QP) problem but added with an extra proximal term of the form 12‖x−x ‖T , where T is a symmetric positive semidef...

An efficient inexact symmetric Gauss-Seidel based majorized ADMM for high-dimensional convex composite conic programming

In this paper, we propose an inexact multi-block ADMM-type first-order method for solving a class of high-dimensional convex composite conic optimization problems to moderate accuracy. The design of this method combines an inexact 2-block majorized semi-proximal ADMM and the recent advances in the inexact symmetric Gauss–Seidel (sGS) technique for solving a multi-block convex composite quadrati...

An Inexact Spingarn's Partial Inverse Method with Applications to Operator Splitting and Composite Optimization

We propose and study the iteration-complexity of an inexact version of the Spingarn’s partial inverse method. Its complexity analysis is performed by viewing it in the framework of the hybrid proximal extragradient (HPE) method, for which pointwise and ergodic iteration-complexity has been established recently by Monteiro and Svaiter. As applications, we propose and analyze the iteration-comple...

Parallel Algorithms for Big Data Optimization

We propose a decomposition framework for the parallel optimization of the sum of a differentiable function and a (block) separable nonsmooth, convex one. The latter term is usually employed to enforce structure in the solution, typically sparsity. Our framework is very flexible and includes both fully parallel Jacobi schemes and Gauss-Seidel (i.e., sequential) ones, as well as virtually all pos...

A Primal-Dual Splitting Method for Convex Optimization Involving Lipschitzian, Proximable and Linear Composite Terms

We propose a new first-order splitting algorithm for solving jointly the primal and dual formulations of large-scale convex minimization problems involving the sum of a smooth function with Lipschitzian gradient, a nonsmooth proximable function, and linear composite functions. This is a full splitting approach, in the sense that the gradient and the linear operators involved are applied explici...
